The national park offers habitat for numerous rare and protected animal species: brown bears, lynxes, snake eagles, goose vultures live in the national park. In addition, there are also a variety of reptiles such as horn vipers and crucifixters who love the karst area. The main attraction of the park is formed by two gorges, Velika Paklenica (large Paklenica) and Mala Paklenica (small Paklenica). The former is a popular destination of Croatian alpinists and a real challenge for all mountaineers. Mala Paklenica is three kilometers east of Velika Paklenica. As the name suggests, this gorge is smaller and shorter, but more difficult to pass, steeper and wilder and therefore climbing is prohibited here. After a tour, three huts offer accommodation: the Dom Paklenica at 550 meters, the struggle struggle at 1200 meters and the Ivine Vodice at 1300 meters.

The area of ​​Paklenice and Velebit is therefore so unique because it is near the Adriatic Magistral, which enables the mountains to climb in winter under almost summer conditions. Not only is mountaineering popular here, but also riding and cycling, where over 800 different plant species can be observed on the way. The majority of the Velebit Mountains are overgrown with old beech forests and is the second largest European reserve of the black pine.
