Tihany
The peninsula with its flat hills in the middle of the Balaton region, in 1952 because of its flora and fauna, invites you to extensive walks and natural history discoveries.
History in nature conservation ...
Tihany extends far into the Balaton and divides it into a small north and a large southern part. On the peninsula there are Lake Belsö and the Külsö Lake, two crater lakes that are higher than the Plattersee and millions of years ago by volcanism. Finds prove that peoples from the Bronze and Iron Age lived here. The Romans also settled here. Since the island is rich in animal and plant species, it was declared the first nature reserve in Hungary in 1952. The small bay Bozsai-Öböl on the southwestern edge of the peninsula preserves the original, natural condition of the bank with its reeds.
Visit tower no signs ...
In the founding certificate of Tihany (written in Latin), many Hungarian settlements and places were mentioned for the first time. This document is therefore considered one of the most important documents in Hungary. The best -known attraction is to this day the funeral of the family of King Andreas. Not even the Turks were able to conquer the fortress expanded to the monastery abbey. The two towers built in 1752 are still the symbol of the Tihany peninsula. There is a gallery in the monastery that houses a wide variety of exhibitions. A tourist attraction is also the often sung Tihanyer Echo: it echoes impressive from the walls of the abbey.
